What you’ve probably found is a lot of dubious claims telling you that you can save thousands of dollars by building your own solar panels and/or wind turbine and save even more off your power bills.

Stop and think, do you expect to build an inexpensive solar panel, wind turbine or alternative energy system that’s going to significantly decrease your home’s energy costs? Although the guides can be instructive and great for that small project, the fact is that the marketing claims are unrealistic, the average person will not significantly reduce their home’s energy costs by building a homemade solar panel and/or wind turbine. Claims that you can save thousands of dollars by building your own solar panels and/or wind turbine and significantly reduce or eliminate your power bill are extremely unrealistic.

Although many of the guides are in-depth and provide detailed instructions for the dedicated DIY’er, the average person will not significantly reduce their home’s energy costs. The dedicated DIY’ers may find this to be a cost effective method, but the average person will find it makes more sense for them to purchase a system and have it installed professionally.

As an example, to receive the maximum rebates and tax incentives for your solar or wind power system, many of the components require minimum standards and warranties that a DIY built system would not have. With factory sealed cells and warranties often exceeding 20-25 years for solar panels, it’s not very realist to build your own. Many states also require an energy system to be installed by a licensed contractor (Licensed to install energy systems).

Whether your a dedicated Do-It-Yourselfer looking for step-by-step detailed instructions or someone just trying to educate themselves on the basics before calling in the professionals, an alternative energy guide can be a valuable resource when considering an alternative energy project. Just remember to keep realistic expectations and be aware of the dubious marketing claims that can be used to sell them.
